New tools to help SMEs improve energy use, lower bills and reduce emissions

Wednesday 4 May 2022

With oil and gas prices skyrocketing, and wholesale electricity prices averaging $150 per megawatt-hour in Queensland over the first quarter of 2022, there’s never been a better time to start improving the energy efficiency and productivity of your business.

The Australian Government has released a set of quick and easy online tools to help smaller businesses save energy, lower bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by making the most effective use of energy in a range of industrial settings.

The free Industrial Energy Tools help SMEs understand what they’re doing well and what they can do to manage and reduce energy use. The tools are a simple set of questions that help industrial businesses that work with:

  • Food and beverage manufacturing;

  • Refrigeration systems;

  • Road transport;

  • Boilers;

  • Compressed air;

  • Dryers, and

  • Furnaces.

The tools are quick and simple to use, taking around ten minutes to complete. They provide a brief assessment of the level of knowledge and maturity about energy efficiency in your business, suggest some key actions and recommend tailored energy reduction strategies. These will help some businesses start their energy management journey, or make sure that other businesses are performing as well as they can be.

If these tools pique your interest, there are also a wide range of other resources available to help you reduce your energy usage. Check out the other briefings, case studies and the sector spotlight for manufacturers on Energy Briefing – or if your business is ready to take it to the next level, consider getting in touch with Energy Efficiency Council member businesses that can provide you with advice tailored to managing and reducing your energy costs.

About Navigating a dynamic energy landscape

There is an enormous amount of information on energy in the public domain, yet it can be hard for business leaders to extract what matters for their businesses.

Navigating a dynamic energy landscape: a briefing for Australian businesses is an executive-level briefing designed to cut through the noise and help businesses confidently navigate Australia’s dynamic energy landscape.

The sector spotlights and other resources that accompany the briefing exist to support this aim.

This initiative is delivered by the Energy Efficiency Council with the support of industry and the NSW Department of Industry, Planning and Environment.
