Dear colleague,

On Tuesday 20 October the Energy Efficiency Council released the third edition of Navigating a dynamic energy landscape: a briefing for Australian businesses and an accompanying briefing for manufacturers.

At the launch of these documents, experts in business, finance, carbon and energy markets, predicted business investment in managing energy costs and carbon will continue even in the midst of recession, driven by both pre-existing strategic drivers, and the Federal Government’s expanded instant asset write-off.

The focus is still on cost, so we know that energy efficiency can provide us returns...so that still remains our number one priority.
— Justin Merrell, Group Environment Director, Lion
Companies who are looking ahead might very well say, well look, now is the time to make some of these investments.
— Tony Wood, Energy Program Director, Grattan Institute
All companies will be looking at any kind of incentives and targets that are driving better efficiency and reducing the cost overall.
— Christina Tonkin, Managing Director - Corporate Finance, ANZ

You can watch both sessions on YouTube now, and download the briefings from energybriefing.org.au

About Navigating a dynamic energy landscape

There is an enormous amount of information on energy in the public domain, yet it can be hard for business leaders to extract what matters for their businesses.

Navigating a dynamic energy landscape: a briefing for Australian businesses is an executive-level briefing designed to cut through the noise and help businesses confidently navigate Australia’s dynamic energy landscape.

The sector spotlights and other resources that accompany the briefing exist to support this aim.

This initiative is delivered by the Energy Efficiency Council with the support of industry and the NSW Department of Industry, Planning and Environment.

Key finding: carbon and COVID-19 shaping energy landscape for business

This year’s briefing finds that the energy landscape businesses are facing right now is being shaped by two massive and interacting forces.

On the one hand, the impact of COVID-19 on global oil and gas markets has driven down the cost of gas and electricity in 2020. This has given business a temporary reprieve, but the underlying fundamentals in both electricity and gas markets mean we probably won’t sustain prices at these levels as the economy recovers.

On the other, climate and emissions shot up the agenda for business in a way that was just not apparent a couple of years ago, driven by global momentum and the devastating bushfires here in Australia. In particular, the avalanche of net zero commitments from business has been striking.

The new incentives from government, and the resources available on energybriefing.org.au will enable businesses to manage the risks and capture the opportunities around energy and carbon in the midst of COVID-19.

There are huge opportunities in this space, and ones that we’re very hopeful that Australian businesses are able to embrace and take advantage of, even as we navigate some pretty difficult economic times.

— Luke Menzel, Chief Executive Officer. Energy Efficiency Council

In addition to the recordings from Tuesday’s two launch events, you’ll find a range of new content on energybriefing.org.au, including case studies from leading businesses, 101s on key energy concepts, technical guides on particular technology upgrade opportunities, and information on business support programs from government and industry.

Over the coming year the Energy Efficiency Council will be continuing to provide timely energy market updates to Australian businesses so they are in the best possible position to manage their costs and emissions through smart energy management.
