Welcome to the fifth edition of the energy briefing quarterly update!

Energy and climate have long been highly contentious in Australian politics. But as we enter the 2022 federal election cycle, the tides have turned: all major parties are now committed to net zero by 2050. But it may still be difficult to cut through the chaff and understand what it means for your business. Read the Energy and net zero in the 2022 election article to get your head around which proposed energy and net zero policies are relevant for your business.

Whilst the early closure of Eraring Power Station got the energy nerds excited, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the associated spikes in international - and Australian - oil and gas prices stole the energy story. Closer to home, the historic floods in Queensland and NSW are demonstrating the potentially ongoing impacts of climate change. NSW and Queensland are rolling out grants and support to businesses impacted by the the severe weather and floods.

As we edge closer to the end of the financial year, we’d be remiss to not remind you to leverage the Australian Government’s temporary full expensing tax depreciation incentive to boost the business case for energy upgrade. If you’re keen to learn more about this, Business Australia and the Energy Efficiency Council (EEC) will host a webinar on Thursday 7 April 2022.

If you’re not yet familiar with this newsletter for businesses looking to manage the risks – and capture the opportunities – of Australia’s energy transition and net zero transformation, it is a quarterly update from the Energy Efficiency Council (EEC) bringing you practical, up-to-date information on grant opportunities, energy markets and energy policy.
